Architectuur is op de eerste plaats een gerealiseerd gebouw: het voorkomen, het gebruik en de ruimtelijke ervaring van en in een gebouw, in vier dimensies. Maar het is niet altijd mogelijk om architectuur op deze primaire manier te beleven. Op tentoonstellingen, tijdens voordrachten en in publicaties wordt ze overgebracht aan de hand van plannen, schetsen, schema’s, ontwerptekeningen, maquettes, ruimtelijke visualisaties en foto’s. Architecten omringen zich dan ook vaak met een aantal experts in representatiemedia.
Koen Van Damme is zo’n expert. Met zijn fotografie onthult hij wat we, in de gefragmenteerde veelheid van de realiteit, vaak over het hoofd zien. De concentratie die zijn architectuurfoto’s uitstralen, wordt nog versterkt doordat ze steeds als een beperkte selectie in minutieus uitgebalanceerde reeksen worden getoond. Anders dan de miljarden fotomakers die sinds de digitale revolutie een niet aflatend spervuur aan vrijblijvende beelden de wereld insturen, tracht Koen Van Damme op die manier betekenis te genereren.
